About the coach
Professional background
Peter Smith is a Sydney-based executive coach, leadership facilitator and retreat leader with 25 years of global practice working with senior leaders and the organisations developing them. His work helps leaders sharpen their thinking under pressure, build authentic leadership presence, and translate strategy into coordinated action.
Peter operates as an independent practitioner and partners with leading global firms to deliver executive coaching, leadership development and team interventions across corporate, government, defence and international institutional contexts.
His client portfolio spans publicly listed multinationals, government agencies, defence forces, UN bodies and high-growth ventures across Australia, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Sectors include resources and energy, aviation, financial services, infrastructure and construction, professional services, higher education, technology, public sector and not-for-profit.
Peter is also recognised for his work in immersive and embodied formats. He designs and leads executive retreats and wilderness intensives — at Aro-Hā in New Zealand, Happy Buddha in the Blue Mountains and through Thrive Retreats — and leads expedition tours for Blue Dot Travel and AusWalks, where leadership, dialogue and reflection are integrated with sustained physical and somatic experience.
His proprietary framework, the CLEAR Field™, integrates more than two decades of practice across executive coaching, leadership development, somatic intelligence and systems thinking. It provides a structured way of working with the conditions that shape how leaders sense, decide and act under pressure.
Peter is an ICF-credentialed coach and an accredited practitioner in NLP, CBT, EQ-i, the Enneagram and MBTI.
Pete’s previous role experiences were in managerial roles in the printing and publishing industry. Human resource roles and project management roles in the Events Industry. And earlier career roles in quality and audit in the recruitment industry.
Coaching process
Peter’s coaching is grounded, direct and outcome-focused. He works with leaders not only on what they are deciding and delivering, but on the underlying conditions — physiological, linguistic, relational and systemic — that determine the quality of their thinking, presence and influence.
A typical engagement begins with a clear contracting conversation: what the leader is here to do, what is in the way, and what would constitute meaningful progress for them and the organisation. From there, Peter combines:
- Structured one-to-one coaching aligned to specific leadership and business outcomes
- Somatic and nervous-system work to expand capacity under pressure
- Inquiry into the language, commitments and narratives shaping action — or stalling it
- Stakeholder and system-level work where a leader’s challenges sit inside team or organisational dynamics that need to shift
Peter creates a confidential, respectful and frank space in which senior leaders can think aloud, be challenged constructively and test new ways of operating. He is comfortable working with high-stakes, ambiguous and politically complex situations.
His goal across every engagement is the same: leaders who are clearer, more self-aware, more grounded under pressure, and more effective at converting intent into coordinated action across the system they lead.
Coaching achievements and results
Peter works effectively with executives, senior leaders and emerging leaders across private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Results clients commonly achieve during coaching engagements include:
- Clarity of priorities and decisive action on long-standing strategic open loops
- Acute awareness of leadership impact and the conditions they create for others
- A more authentic, regulated and grounded leadership presence
- Increased capacity to lead through ambiguity, change and sustained pressure
- Clearer, more honest communication with teams, peers and stakeholders
- Stronger boundaries around time, energy and accountability
- Improved team alignment, trust and execution where the coaching extends into the broader system
Past Clients
Peter has coached and facilitated for senior leaders across a wide range of organisations including BHP, Qantas, IAG, CIMIC, the University of Sydney, CCEP, Essential Energy, KPMG, Honeywell, Siemens, Macquarie Bank, the NSW Government, the Australian Defence Force, the United Nations, and major hospitality and resort groups across EMEA.
