Learning isn’t one-size-fits-all, yet many learning experiences are still designed around assumptions about what people need, how they learn, and what will engage them. Human-Centred Learning Design shifts the focus from designing learning for people to designing learning with a deeper understanding of the people it is intended to support.
This interactive workshop introduces the principles of human-centred learning design and explores practical ways to understand learners before developing learning experiences. Participants will examine how learner context, motivations, behaviours, challenges, environments and diverse needs can influence how people engage with learning.
Through simple research, empathy and discovery techniques, participants will learn how to gather meaningful insights about their learners and use those insights to inform learning design decisions. They will also explore how assumptions and unconscious biases can shape existing learning programs, and identify opportunities to challenge these assumptions and design more effectively around real learner needs.
Using practical activities, scenarios and examples, participants will explore how to translate learner insights into more engaging, relevant and inclusive learning experiences. They will leave with practical tools and approaches they can apply immediately to better understand their audiences, identify barriers to learning, and create experiences that are more meaningful and effective for the people they are designed to support.
Ideal for learning designers, facilitators, educators and anyone responsible for creating learning experiences.

Shaheen is an inclusive learning consultant, facilitator, and founder of Ta’leem Consulting. With over 13 years of experience across higher education, corporate L&D, and the social impact sector, she has trained facilitators, designed capability programs, and developed the Inclusive Learning Framework, which is now used to upskill trainers and teams in neurodivergence, multicultural communities, and inclusive design.
Shaheen is regularly invited to speak on topics including:
* How neurodivergence shows up in organisations
* Designing neuroinclusive strategies in the workplace
* Inclusive facilitation to engage more people
* Working with multicultural communities
* The basic principles of inclusive design
She regularly speaks at conferences, facilitates community engagement workshops, and trains L&D and HR teams in inclusive learning, with a consistent focus on one key question: How can organisations increase engagement and participation in workshops and training rooms?
Outside the training room, Shaheen spent several years as part of an improv theatre house team—an experience that proved surprisingly valuable for developing her ability to read a room, engage diverse audiences, and hold space, both on stage and in the workshop environment.
