In this workshop, we'll harness your entire team's input, experience, and insights to develop a set of guiding principles for how you will engage with each other as a high-functioning, collaborative team.
It's designed to honour each individual's contribution to the team beyond their on-paper role, to design how you want to work together, and to connect your day-to-day to your organisation's broader purpose.
This workshop uses the LEGO Serious Play method in a process of reflection, deep communication, and ideation to establish a big, agreed-upon sense of identity and purpose, to develop a shared picture of the team's ideal state for how they interact with each other, while acknowledging the realities of the job.
Approaching the serious conversations in a playful environment derails counterproductive competitiveness, de-escalates potential conflict, and invites everyone to bring their most authentic contributions to the table.
This workshop is ideal for groups of people stepping into a new team environment. This could mean a newly assembled team, a team repositioning its purpose, a team amalgamated through a restructure, or simply a team that wants to take a fresh, deliberate look who they are together, and how they interact.
All workshop materials will be provided including use of the LEGO, relevant stationery, and some canvases to keep track of our thinking throughout the day.
Joel has built his career around helping people bring out their creative best, and to understand themselves better as learners and communicators.
Drawing on his roots in constructivist and constructionist learning, Joel uses the LEGO Serious Play method to help individuals, teams, and whole organisations do their best thinking by leaving their "outer grownup" at the door, and letting the inner child do the important work. We build the understandings we hold in our heads by building solutions to a challenge with our hands.
As an experienced learning designer, educator, and conscientious objector to ever fully growing up, Joel brings over a decade of facilitation experience to the table, along with a big pile of LEGO bricks.
He has worked with organisations as diverse as The Positivity Institute, SpacetoCo, Bethanie, the Department of Education, the Water Corporation, and RAC. His experience spans corporate, not-for-profit, government, health, education, and startups.

“Joel, you’re not taking this seriously!” I’ve heard that one a bit over the years. If there’s a joke to be made, I’ll make it. If there’s a lighter side to an issue, I’ll find it. If things aren’t looking great, I’ll be the one to attempt to lighten the mood with a little pinch […]
