The statistics about stress and its impact in the workplace speak for themselves. It is estimated that over $500 million is paid annually in Australia in workers’ compensation for work-related mental health problems, and over 90% of serious work-related mental health claims are caused by work-related stress. On average, in any 12 month period, more than 20% of Australian employees report taking time off work due to feeling mentally unwell, and in a recent report from Beyond Blue, half of Australian workers surveyed felt that their workplace was ‘mentally unhealthy’. Burnout is at record high levels—addressing stress in the workplace is a challenge that we must meet for the sake of employee wellbeing and organisational performance.
The Growth & Resilience for Organisations & Workers (GROW) program is a workplace initiative focused on our ability to deal with things that we find tough and challenging at work – the things that cause us stress. GROW provides research-informed workshop content and resources to help employees, teams, and organisations build their own resilience road map. Booster sessions and ongoing consultation help to embed principles and strategies into the workplace. Based on extensive input from teams across various sectors, the GROW program was developed by experts in the award-winning Psychology of Active, Healthy Living Group (see www.jcu.edu.au/pahl).
As well as improving self-awareness and communication processes, GROW provides participants and teams with strategies to deal better with pressure, overcome challenges they encounter at work, and develop a stronger support network in their workplace.
