Overview
Written communication is a critically important skill for public servants. Clear and impactful written communication is fundamental to the image and reputation of all government departments. This workshop will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, techniques and skills which underpin effective writing applicable to the needs of individual agencies and Ministers. Participants will be engaged in practical exercises which provide opportunities to apply these skills to clear and concise Ministerial Briefings and Parliamentary Questions. Importantly, participants will be equipped with skills and insights about impactful writing which will give them confidence in applying what they have learned to the workplace.

Who is this workshop for
This workshop is designed for early career public servants and those who have some experience in writing for government. The workshop specifically focuses on the writing principles applicable to both Ministerial Briefings Notes and Parliamentary Questions.

Participants will be provided with a copy of workshop slides and handouts used during the workshop.

Participants are asked to bring examples of themes or topics which form the basis for written communication they have or may be required to produce in their role.

Julie Crews Business Ethicist
Julie's area of passion is the development of leaders with integrity. Julie has had a long career in education and the public service. Her public service encompassed both state and federal agencies including: Department of Premier and Cabinet, The Office of the Auditor General and The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. In these roles her work included the provision of advice on government policies, the preparation of Ministerial briefing notes, responses to Parliamentary Questions and Ministerial speeches.
She has two undergraduate degrees, in Education and the Arts, a Masters of Industrial Relations and a Doctorate which examined Ethical Leadership conducted with Chief Executive Officers of both the public and private sectors.
Her research and corporate work has covered such areas as values held by university students, the ethical dilemmas faced by local government planners, police and executives in Sri Lanka.
She has conducted many forums on ethics and leadership in both the public and private sectors at a state and national level. Julie has also been invited to work and present on ethics and leadership internationally in Sri Lanka, Singapore, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and, most recently, Italy.
Julie taught Business Ethics and Corporate Governance at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia. She has appeared regularly in various media outlets including radio, television and print media speaking about business ethics.
